Checklist for Car Sellers

01/16/2021

It looks like you're selling your car... To make this a smooth process we've put together a checklist to guide you along the way and to ensure you don't forget any important steps.

Checklist for Car Sellers

Step 1: Is the car registered?
In Queensland, all vehicles need to be registered with the Queensland Department of Main Roads. Any vehicle rego that has expired for more than 3 months must be sold as unregistered.

In order to transfer the registration to the new owner, you will need to visit the Queensland Department of Main Roads online (https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/registration/transfer/online) or in person and complete the ‘seller’ section of the paperwork for the buyer.

Step 2: Do you have a Roadworthy Certificate?

In Queensland, a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) is required at the time of the vehicle transfer.

It is the responsibility of the seller to ensure that the car has a current RWC prior to selling, but some buyers prefer to do it themselves. Make sure that your RWC has been issued not more than 30 days prior to the transfer.

Step 3: Finally, have you created your receipt of sale?

When a payment is made directly to your account or via bank cheque, it is important to keep a record with a receipt of sale.
